Published playwright, Jessica Lynn Johnson, awarded BEST NATIONAL SOLO ARTIST by the Dialogue One Festival, has toured internationally with her solo shows for over a decade and is a proud member of the LA Women’s Theatre Festival Submission Screening Panel. Her 1st solo show Oblivious to Everyone was published in The Book of Estrogenius 2008, and is a 1 woman, 10 character dramedy centering around Carrie, a media junkie, who has developed multiple personalities due to her unhealthy obsession with American pop-culture. Rapidly flipping identities like TV stations, this LA bombshell grapples with issues of homophobia, sexism, racism, and materialism. Johnson uses comedy as a means to examine the influential stereotypes, prejudices, and pressures prevalent in American media. Johnson’s 2nd solo show Ze has toured Universities nationwide and has been seen at the Out North Contemporary Art Space in Alaska, Matthew Corozine Theatre in NYC, the LA Women’s Theatre Festival, Level Ground Festival in Pasadena, and many other festivals all over the country. Ze is a 1 woman, 15 character dramedy that examines gender construction, sexuality and spirituality, and many other issues regarding the LGBTQ community. The piece centers around Tessa, a 30 year old virgin, who is in love with her Transgender best friend, but is in deep turmoil over her feelings due to her religious upbringing.
Johnson’s solo work has been seen in the LA Women’s Theatre Festival, the NYC Samuel French Playwright Festival, the Kansas City Fringe Festival, the NYC International Fringe Festival, the Sola Voce Festival, the Monodrama Thespis Festival in Germany, the Black Magic Women’s Theatre Festival in Amsterdam and enjoyed an extended run at NYC’s prestigious Theatre Row on 42nd Street.
Johnson is also the Founder of Soaring Solo Los Angeles LLC, a company dedicated solely and passionately to the direction and development of one person plays. Johnson works privately and affordably with solo artists, wherever they are at in their solo journey, to take their solo show to new heights. In addition to her business as a solo professional, for years she has also taught a 100% free, 100% awesome solo theatre class, often held at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks. She has directed hundreds of solo artists such as Carla Delaney’s VOICES, Theresa Stroll’s MY BIG FAT BLONDE MUSICAL, Sofia Marie Gonzalez’s BULLY-MIA, Scott Turner Schofield’s 365 DAYS OF CRAZY, Carmelo Alvarez’s NOT MY SHOW, Bonnie Sludikoff’s THAT’S WHAT SHE DIDN’T SAY, Kyla Garcia’s THE MERMAID WHO LEARNED HOW TO FLY, Joseph Steven’s ANSWERS OUTTA THE BLUE, Laura Jenkins’ TRIANGLES ARE MY FAVORITE SHAPE, and many many others! Johnson’s clients have been seen in the Hollywood Fringe Festival, the United Solo Theatre Festival in NYC, the LA Women’s Theatre Festival, IO West Funny Women Festival, Son of Semele Festival, Outdoor Voices Festival, to name a few!
Most recently, Johnson was thrilled to direct 5 solo artists in the LA Women’s Theatre Festival, 17 solo shows in Whitefire Theatre’s Solo Fest 2017, and 15 solo shows in the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2017. Over the years, her solo shows haven taken home TOP OF FRINGE, ENCORE PRODUCER AWARDS, & several other accolades!
